Casual teachers play a vital role in the education system, providing valuable support when needed. Here’s what you need to know about their rates of pay and entitlements in New South Wales.
Rates of Pay
Casual teachers’ rates of pay are outlined in Schedule 4, Table 1, and Table 2 of the award. These tables detail the hourly rates for casual teachers based on their qualifications and accreditation level.
Daily Engagement Hours
A casual teacher’s daily hours of engagement are six and one-half hours per day, including a 30-minute break during continuous work. The minimum daily engagement required is two hours.
Relief Periods and Timetable Provisions
When a casual teacher relieves a teacher with a set timetable (as provided in clause 15), provisions from subclauses 15.6 and 15.7 apply. This allows the casual teacher to receive equivalent time off either at the beginning or end of their daily engagement period.
Reporting for Duty
If a casual teacher reports for duty but is then informed that their services are not required, they are entitled to receive payment for half a day’s pay at the appropriate rate in Schedule 4, Table 1, and Table 2.
Loaded Rates of Pay
Casual teachers’ rates of pay are loaded by 5% to include incidents of employment like sick leave, family and community service leave, special leave, and leave loading. However, entitlements under the Long Service Leave Act 1955 and other specific determinations remain unaffected.
Accreditation and Pay
Casual teachers receive pay based on their accreditation level. They will be classified under either Band 1 or Band 2 as per Schedule 4, depending on their accreditation. Accreditation requirements for teachers are outlined in subclause 3.5 of the award.
Advancement to Band 2 Pay
Casual teachers starting at Band 1 pay will need to work for a full-time equivalent of two years before becoming eligible to receive Band 2 pay, provided they have attained the relevant accreditation.
Casual School Counsellors
Casual school counsellors’ rates of pay are also based on their registration. They receive either Band 1 or Band 2 pay as provided in Schedule 4, depending on their registration. Registration requirements are specified in clause 3.20 and 3.26.
Understanding the rates of pay and entitlements for casual teachers is essential for both educators and schools to ensure fair compensation and adherence to the guidelines set by the Department of Education in New South Wales.
